The White Rann: What’s in a name?

Located in the westernmost extreme of Gujarat, the White Rann is a salt marsh which, many million years ago, was a shallow part of the Arabian Sea. Situated in the Thar Desert region of Kutch district in Gujarat, this place is famous for more than one reason. This area is covered by pristine white sand that literally shimmers like a sea of diamonds on a full moon night. The region is also famous for the Rann Utsav held for 3 months each year by the Gujarat government to showcase the best of the local culture, people, cuisine, hospitality and handicrafts. Contrary to its name, the Rann is quite colorful and vibrant with life. On a different note, the name itself is suggestive of a mystery, an enigma that entices the hearer the from the moment the name is uttered.

Locals have often reported seeing inexplicable lights that seem to blink arbitrarily and local lore has it that they are emitted by ghosts to lure weary travelers into the unknown. Investigators have given a plausible scientific explanation to it, but its complex nature has made these lights the stuff of folklore, known as “Chir Batti”.

Its charm has lured filmmakers to its expansive pristine whiteness and the fact that it shares its border with Pakistan and has had a tense situation for long coupled with the beautiful view of the sun setting below the horizon keeps the interest alive. Like the Taj, the Rann’s white beauty is ever shining.
