STORY OF BHUJ

Geographically located in the heart of Kutch, blessed a vibrant history and cultural delight, the soil of Kutch smells of ethnicity. The beautiful little town was founded in the year 1510 by a local ruler, MaharaoHamir. Bhuj was named after the fortress called Bhuia that overlooks the whole town from this nearby hill.It was struck by a major earthquake in January 2001 which caused a great deal of damage and loss to lives.

Hostorically, Bhuj has overcome and witnessed many natural calamities and unfortunate events. It has also left a huge impact on Indian civilization. It remained an independent princely state during the British rule in India. It became a part of India after the country gained independence in 1947. This town holds great significance in the invasion of Alexander. It is also mentioned in the course of exile of the Panadavas. On memoirs, this place also holds the famous romance of the saintly couple Jesal-Toral.

Culturally rich in handicraft work on leather and bandhni, Bhuj attracts fashion freaks and designers from all over the world. It is also a major part of Rann Utsav (cultural and art fair) which is highly acclaimed in the Gujarat Tourism advertisements by Amitabh Bachchan. Due to its close proximity to the Pakistan border, movies like Border were shot here.

Due to the earthquake of 26th Jan, 2001 the town was completely devastated with homes, historic buildings and other concrete turning into debris. After 10 years of the tragedy, the Jesal-Toralsamadhi still awaits reconstruction.

It boasts of the magnificence and elegance of the Jadeja Dynasty that ruled over Bhuj for ages through its historic heritage and architecture. To suffice the grandeur of the town, promotional strategies should punch with “Kuchh din to guzaarobhujmein”.
