HISTORY OF NARAYAN SAROVAR


Considered as the most sacred pilgrimage for the people following Hinduism, Narayan Sarovar is located in Lakhpat, Kutch. It is also called “Narayansar”. Situated on the coastal highway, the main attraction of Narayan Sarovar are the temples which are surrounded by a strong wall.Narayan Sarovar is one of the main four lakes in India with Man Sarovar, Pampa Sarovar, Bindu Sarovar. It is described in the ancient religious book Shrimad Bhagwat.

Narayansar literally means the Lake of Narayana which is one of the names of Lord Vishnu. As described in the legends, holy river Saraswati had an out-let in the sea which is present near the Narayan Sarovar. The Narayan Sarovar lake was filled with holy waters of River Saraswati making it one of the five holy lakes for the Hindus. Mahaprabhu Vallabhacharya during his lifetime is also said to have visited Narayan Sarovar. He spent time here as cited and the site is sacred for follower of Pushtimarg also.

This place is also approved in the history with the story of the lake which was found by Alexander. It is said to have lasted till the change of the Indus river route as recognized by the earthquake of 1819. Vagheli Mahakunvar, who was the wife of Rao Desalji (1718-1741) built temples of Laxminarayana, Trikamray, Adinarayana, Govardhan Nath and Goddess Laxmi in Dwarka style dating back to 1734. Trikamray’s temple resembles the style and shape of Koteshwar temple.

In accordance to the Hindu theology, a fair is held at Narayan Sarovar on the 11th to 15th day marked in the month of Karthik of Hindu calendar.
