Kandla in Gujarat is a seaport in Kutch District of western India which has the distinction of being the first special
economic zone set up in India and Asia. It is about 90km away from the Gulf of Kutch. Established in 1965, Kandla has become
the largest multiple-product SEZ in the country. However the credit for identifying this site goes to the British Royal Navy who
first appraised Kandla for its suitability as a port.
Now, the Port of Kandla has expanded
greatly in the field of oil import and grain export and is one of India’s
highest earning ports. Due to technological inventions and good labour
management, Kandla established a new record in the year 2006-07 by handling a
volume of 52.9 million tonnes. Kandla is also known for
the production of chemicals, petroleum, iron, steel, machinery, coal and metal
containers. Nature-lovers
have plenty of reasons to explore this port and it is also famous for its picturesque
locales, striking beaches and unique ethnicity. The port city draws out
tourists in large numbers because of its beautiful natural surroundings such as
the Sahyadri mountain ranges, the Gira falls as well as the Dang forest.
