Anjar is a municipality, a tehsil and town, in Kutch
district of the Gujarat state in India. It is in Southern of Kutch which is a
town of historic importance, around 40 km away from Kandla Port which is one of
the biggest ports in India. Anjar is said to be the oldest town in Kutch
District which was founded around 650 AD with approximately 1,400 years of
history.
History of Anjar:
Due to lack of written documentation or evidences, the
history of the town is full of mysteries. Popular stories say that a group of
early settlers who were led by the brother of King of Ajmer, Warrior Ajay Pal
who was also called as Ajepal from Rajasthan arrived and settled there around
650 AD. Slowly the settlement became a centre of commerce and trade which was
flourished. It was always been a target of invasion of warriors of Khalifa
clan, due to its wealth and prosperity.
Ajay Pal dedicated his life to protect the town, as he was
the ruler of the town and the founder of the settlement. It is said that he
established the security centre which was first coastal somewhere near Anjar in
Kutch. Ajay Pal died around 685 A.D., due to a wound suffered in Vikram Samvat
741, while fighting with Khalifas. He is worshipped as a saint due to his
selfless sacrifice, efforts in protecting the town and surrounding area from
invaders and in the outskirts of the town, his temple is located.
